Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of reminiscence therapy on death anxiety, ego integrity and life satisfaction for the home residing elderly.
The subjects were sampled from the members of senior citizens' centres located in Honam District. Total number was 73, 38 for the control group and 35 for the experimental group. The study was carried out after a non-equivalent pretest-posttest
design.
Data were collected from 23 Jun. to 17 Nov. 1993. Reminiscence therapy was applied only to the experimental group, once a week for 6 weeks.
Death anxiety, ego integrity and life satisfaction levels were measured by the questionnaires and as an objective indicator, plasma cortisol levels were tested before and after treatment.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The death anxiety level of the experimental group was significantly reduced after the treatment as contrasted with that of the control group(P-0.000).
As for the differences in the factors of death anxiety before and after treatment, there was a significant decrease for factors, 'being totally immobile' immobile'(P=0.000), 'decomposition of body'(P=0.001), 'hate to lose control'(P=0.018), and
'family
detachment'(P=0.033).
2. On the contrary, the ego integrity level of the experimental group increased significantly after the treatment as contrasted with that of the control group(P=0.000).
As for the differences in the factors of ego integrity, it increased significantly for the factors, 'responsibility for life'(P=0.050), 'acceptance of age'(P=0.005), 'acceptance of life'(P=0.033).
3. The life satisfaction level of the experimental group also increased significantly after the treatment as contrasted with that of the control group(P=0.000).
4. The analysis of relationships among death anxiety, ego integrity and life satisfaction proved that there was a positive correlation between the levels of life satisfaction and ego integrity(P=0.000).
5. As for the difference in the plasma cortisol level before and after treatment, there was no significant difference for the levels between groups(P=0.996).
These results suggested that reminiscence therapy may promote ego integrity and life satisfaction but reduce death anxiety in several factors.
